Calculus: Early Transcendentals,
6th edition, by Stewart
Calculator:
Calculators are not to be used on
quizzes, exams, or the final exam.
Homework: Homework problems are assigned, but not graded. It is imperative
that you practice and understand the homework problems as they will be the
basis for the quizzes and exams. In order to succeed in this class, you need to
have your homework done before each class so you will be ready for new
materials.
Quizzes:
·
Calculus
Skills No Partial Credit (CSNPC) Quiz: CSNPC
quizzes will be given during recitations. Quiz questions are drawn from the set
of skills problems at http://calculus.math.rpi.edu
and each quiz will last about ten minutes. Since CSNPC quiz will be graded on a
no partial credit basis, you need to practice each category enough times
so that you can work out each problem in about 2-3 minutes without making any
errors. For each of the 10 quizzes,
students will get two opportunities (Quiz A and Quiz B) to take the quiz during
consecutive recitation periods. Only the highest score on the two quizzes will
count toward the final grade. The grade on Quiz A will not be reported to
students before the following recitation and Quiz B. Thus, to take full
advantage of these opportunities, all students should attend and be prepared
for both quizzes A and B. This policy is in place because one of the course
objectives is for all students to become proficient at basic manipulation
skills.
·
In-Class
Quizzes: In-Class Quizzes will be
given during lectures. The quiz questions will come from topics covered in
lectures and assigned homework. Each quiz will last about 15 minutes. The
lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Attending the lectures and finishing the
homework on time will be the keys to be successful in quizzes (and of course,
in this course).
Exams: There are four in-class exams during the
semester. The date and materials are posted on the Tentative Daily Schedule.
There will be two types of problems on the exams: No Partial Credits problems -
like a CSNPC Quizzes, and work out problems - like In-Class
Quizzes.
Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive and mandatory. The final exam will be of the same format as the
in-class exams. It will only be given at the time assigned by the registrar's
office (time to be determined in the near future). Do not make travel
arrangements that may conflict with your final exams.
Attendance:
·
Since most
recitations will have opportunities to take quizzes, missing a recitation will
result in a missed opportunity for the quiz that cannot be made up. (Recall
that each quiz has two opportunities.)
Make
up Policy: You may not make up a CSNPC
Quiz, since there are two opportunities to take each quiz. A missed exam
and in-class quiz will result in a zero and cannot be made up except for (1)
you have made a prior arrangement with me or (2) you
have an excuse from the Dean of Student's Office.
Grade
Appeals: You have one week from when
a graded work is returned to your section of the course to dispute your
assigned grade. Grade appeals must be made in writing TO ME with your signature
and include the original work in dispute.
Academic
Integrity: You are encouraged to work
together on the homework problems. The exams and quizzes are to be solely your
own work. The CSNPC problems are scanned before being returned to the students.
A student who submits a grade appeal with a changed answer is held fully
responsible, regardless of whether they "knew" the answer was changed
or not. Students must make any grade appeal to the professor within one week of
the class time that the graded work was returned to their section. The Rensselaer Handbook of
Student Rights and Responsibilities includes a section on academic
dishonesty. Please review this material. The penalty for an act of academic
dishonesty will include an F in the course and a report to the Dean of Students
Office.
